When reviewing MBA resumes, I often see candidates list every task they’ve ever performed in their professional career but leave out critical details that truly set them apart. Their resumes are packed with all the tasks they have performed at work, yet crucial highlights- like awards and recognitions- are often missing.
For example, one candidate I recently worked with had crammed two pages with every minor task he had undertaken in his 12-year career but completely omitted one of the most significant aspects of his journey- his awards. When I asked if he had received any recognition for his achievements, he replied, “Yes, I’ve received numerous awards, but I left them out because I ran out of space.”
Another candidate hesitated to mention a prestigious national award, the Distinguished Young Professional Award, because he didn’t want to come across as boastful.
Let me clarify: showcasing your awards is not bragging- it’s demonstrating your accomplishments. Awards reflect recognition you have earned for your skills, contributions, and impact. Including them doesn’t just add value to your resume; it makes your candidacy more compelling in a competitive applicant pool.
So, if you have received awards or recognitions, whether at the organizational, industry, or national level, include them. Highlighting these achievements gives admissions committees a deeper understanding of your professional excellence and your ability to add value.
Don’t hesitate- let your awards speak for your hard work and success.
